81% Of Recent College Grads Wished They Were Taught More Life Skills Before Graduating College

A recent poll backed by Experian Boost™ of recent college graduates found that an estimated 81% of respondents wished that they were taught more life skills before graduating college.

This does not come as much of a surprise, as common life skills such as filing taxes, creating a resume, building credit, and getting a mortgage are not very common in American school curriculum.

What Options Are There?

The problem lies in the fact that it is not easily feasible to incorporate classes that teach these skills into our current schooling system. Many school districts are understaffed, underfunded, and many teachers are underpaid.

The other possible option is for parents to teach their children. Although at first glance this may seem to be the logical solution, home education may not be as comprehensive as what most teens today need. While we all love to believe that we are the best teachers, it does not always translate to our kids being the best listeners. Many teens don’t want to be lectured on topics such as these life skills by their own parents. It’s already difficult enough to keep our kids' attention for more than 20 minutes, let alone hours explaining these skills. These skills take hours to teach and grasping just a bare concept of these skills is not always easy.

What topics are today’s teens looking for? Let’s take a step back and look at what they want to know.

What Topics Teens Wish Were Covered:

  • How to get a mortgage

  • How to budget and what to budget for

  • What credit is and how it works

  • How to navigate the healthcare system

  • How to invest

  • How to get a credit card

  • How to build a good resume

  • How to file taxes

  • How to properly prepare for an interview

So now that we know that today’s teens have a desire to learn these life skills, what options are we left with? Do we wait for our kids to run into a problem to ask us what to do? Do we let our kids attempt to figure it out on their own? Neither of these options are great choices. But up to this point these were the only options available.

The Solution

Until now, the only options for teens to learn these life skills were to be taught at home, or figure out for themselves. Recently, a company called the Lyfe Course created a platform that is solely focused on teaching today’s teens the skills they need to know. They went out and asked highschool and college students what they wished they were taught by school and put it all in one package. The course is taught by the likes of university professors from UCLA and Loyola Marymount, a tax professional, an insurance broker, a mortgage broker, and a certified financial planner. These instructors cover topics from filing taxes, building credit, getting a mortgage, getting insurance, and many more essential topics.

The Ability To Rewatch Lessons

The whole platform is completely online so teens can access it whenever and wherever they want. This way if they ever need to check back in on a topic to clarify, they are able to. The Lyfe Course also plans to keep adding new lessons based on what their students want to see covered.

It’s a great option for your kids if you are looking for something to build off of what you have already taught them or even if you’re looking to start your kids from scratch.
